you may have misused the term of "workgroup".
you dont have to join a workgroup. just set the workgroup with the name
of workgroup and you are in.
if you'd meant join a "domain", you may have to ask for the approval of
the domain controller (speak to the administrator). i think samba has an
option to work as a domain controller. i never tried it though.
if you can browse the printer from the explorer, then you dont have to
install the unix printing service of w2k/xp. just print to it.
