Director of Counseling and Wellness

Role Description:

Responsible for the oversight, management and function of Counseling Services at The Tianjin Juilliard School (School or TJS), and the development of wellness programs. This is a full-time position. Please note, the Director of Counseling and Wellness will be ‘on call’ 7 days and evenings per week when school is in session.

Responsibilities:

• Responsible for the provision, supervision, and administration of mental health services that pertain to the psychological health of the students at The Tianjin Juilliard School. Note, clinical services only cover students in the graduate degree and related programs at the School.

• Provides mental health counseling for students individually and in groups.

o Conducts intake assessment of students as needed

o Provides weekend, holiday, and summer coverage

o Completes all requisite documentation as it relates to this service

• Explores partnerships with external mental health providers (including psychiatrists) and other medical professionals from whom TJS students seek care.

• Must be able to obtain licensure or a certificate as necessary from the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, the China Psychological Society (CPS) or other accredited regulatory agencies, both in and outside China, that may develop requirements to practice social work or psychology in China.

• Maintains, if necessary, personal licensure and professional malpractice insurance documentation.

• Conducts clinical assessment interviews to evaluate the seriousness of problems and concerns including, but not limited to, alcohol and other drug use and assessment of eating disorders.

• Must be willing to be ‘on call’ 7 days and evenings per week when the School is in session as part of the management team for student emergencies.

• Works closely with the Office of Student Development and the Manager of Residence Life to provide services to adopt preventive measures to students deemed to be at high risk to themselves or others.

• Consults with the the Director of Counseling at The Juilliard School in New York (JNY) as necessary to ensure standards of care at TJS are aligned with those at JNY.

• Makes recommendations for leaves of absences and where necessary, functions as the liaison between the School and families on behalf of students experiencing psychiatric difficulties.

• Serves as the spokesperson for the service in school-wide events and represents the service to the larger school community for purposes of outreach, special programs, and consultation (emergency and otherwise).

• Collaborates with the Student Development team to develop educational mental health and wellenss outreach programs.

• Functions as a liaison with Student Services, Residence Life Staff, and other departments of the school as needed.

• Participates in multi-disciplinary student support committees where appropriate.

• Facilitate health promotion programs/workshops that focus on mental health issues.

• Reports on a regular basis to the Associate Dean of Student Development, and makes him/herself available for consultation with the related senior leadership when appropriate.
