At least 12,000 years ago,primitive people made one of history's great journeys. They crossed aland bridge between Asia and North America. This land bridgedisappeared underwater as people spread throughout North and SouthAmerica.

Now a U.S. engineer, T.Y. Lin, wants to restore the land linkbetween Asia and North America. He proposes building a 55-mile-longbridge between Russia and Alaska. His Intercontinental Peace Bridgewould become the first manmade bridge connecting two continents. As described in Popular Mechanics magazine (April 1994), Lin'sbridge would be a great engineering feat. It would be made up of 220giant sections that would link the mainland of Alaska to mainlandRussia.
