First quarter at UC Davis has definitely been a new experience. The most obvious change was college itself. Until that point, I lived at home and hadn’t spent longer than a week or two away from it without my family. The only person I knew after my parents left was my roommate. Getting to know other people turned out to be pretty easy, as everyone wanted to get to know each other. Events also made this easier with free arcade games as well.
My dorm room was much easier to get used to than I thought. At first, it was really different from what I expected because I had stayed at a Davis dorm before at Tercero and the setup was totally different (different type of bed, wooden desks and wooden dresser). The other big difference of the dorm is that our room opens and automatically closes like a hotel room. This is normally no problem because I keep my key with me at all times. Once this quarter in the middle of the night I forgot to bring the key with me, which locked me out of my room for 2 hours before I found a phone to get the residential advisor to open the door for me.
When classes started, I expected them to be similar to high school, but on a bigger scale. In a way it was, there were still lectures and everything and they did last longer. However, there is a lot more freedom. Professors often give breaks in the middle and there are random breaks where the professor suddenly breaks the stress in the class by throwing things across the room.
In addition to the classes, I had to get used to the town of Davis. Since UC Davis had everything I really needed to function, it took a while to get used to where everything was because I only went to a specific part once a week. There was one time when we were hungry and my roommate had the idea to go to McDonald’s since it was only a few blocks down the street. Little did we know, it was actually farther than we thought, and ended up to be 1 mile down the road. When we finally got to McDonald’s, it started pouring. We ended being stuck at McDonalds until it closed at 10 pm (which was really weird for a McDonald’s) and then walking back to our dorm in heavy rain.
Overall college took some time getting used to, but in the end is its own experience. Davis offered a new environment to get used to, as well as a new type of class, where professors can teach in their own way with whatever works for them. This in turn reflects the general theme of my life at Davis thus far, exploring new areas and changing things up.
