why? they can throw out all the PCs and re-train the staff. If not, it's
going to be a boost in employment that's actually good for the economy in
the long run.

true, but it's not unprecedented. Unix did similar things to universities.
Microsoft did it in the PC revolution, although not mostly through donations
. MS was sued every day, so what? It's just life for being a dominant leader
. In other words, it's a good problem to have.

A better way to do that would be to offer a $300 credit to anyone trading
in iPad 2, and donate all of the received iPad 2 to schools.

That would be the wrong thing to do. Imagine when the schools get $billions,
they might just raise teacher and administrator pay. Worse, if they are not
smart enough, they might go out and buy more PCs or cheap Android knockoffs
. That would be missing the point, and a huge opportunity wasted.
