Western-built aircraft with more than 100 seats make up 74% of the Russian
airline fleet and 28% in the regional fleet.
Speaking at last week’s Aircraft Maintenance Russia and the CIS conference
in Moscow, Vasiliy Shapkin, head of State Research and Development Institute
for Civil Aeronautics, said that in 2011 89% of Russia’s passengers flew
in Western-built aircraft. Passenger traffic on Russian aircraft decreased
from 9% in 2006, the largest in history, to 5% in 2011. Soviet-built
aircraft has a 6% share.
Russian carriers have 605 passenger aircraft with more than 100 seats in
their fleets, 340 regional planes, 127 cargo aircraft and 32 business jets.
These include 171 Boeing 737s (both Classic and NextGen), 165 Airbus A320s
family, 17 A330s, 20 747s, 12 777s, 32 767s, 32 757s, 47 CRJ100/200s, 17 ATR
72s and 14 ATR 42s. The modern Russian passenger fleet includes 10 Il-96-
300s, eight Tupolev Tu-214s, nine Tu-204-100s and five Sukhoi SSJ100s.
From 2006-2011, Russian carriers acquired 557 Western-built and 40 Russian-
built planes. In 2011, 149 aircraft were delivered.
According to Shapkin, Russian passenger traffic will grow 6.7%-8.2% annually
from 2012-2030 and the Western share will remain high.
