I was talking to a friend today and she was a Chinese medical graduate. She
went on to do a Phd and now she is doing research. I was just asking her
randomly about her medical training and rotation experiences, (all of which
were in china), since I am always kinda interested in these kind of stuff.
Something she told me was quite amusing. She told me that in the OR,
especially during those big surgeries that last quite a few hours, the (male
) surgeons usually entertain themselves by telling sex jokes to the nurses (
especially the young and pretty ones). While watching grey's anatomy, I was
shocked by the ease and absent-mindedness of the surgeons and firmly
believed that these were things that occur only in TV or at most in American
hospitals. Chinese doctors would never do that. So apparently I am wrong.
She also confirmed another stereotype that I thought only happens in TV.
Surgeons are more likely to have unstable marriages in China ( I heard in
the US too), especially the handsome ones. I guess everybody knows why now.
It is just amusing ( and interesting) to me how such things are so universal
that it crosses the boundaries of culture and geography. Thinking about Drs
. Mcdreamy and Mcsteamy, I can almost see many of their equivalents in the
hospitals in He Nan province ( where my friend is from) or X province (
insert your favorite here) doing similar stuffs. Our hospitals in China are
perhaps more modernized than we thought after all. :)
