我做了一个pathway analysis的网站。用户输入一组基因，就可以知道哪些pathway
是enriched的。
这片文章刚刚也录用了。
现在的问题是，老板跟学校的一个校长介绍了这个网站。周五校长要和我们讨论
这个网站商业化的问题。
关键问题：1）可不可能商业化？2）我愿不愿意商业化。
请问我该如何回答呢？
我的网站目前是纯学术目的的。用到了很多免费的公用的数据库（这些不是我创建的）
比如KEGG，biocarta， reactome等。
所以是不是不能商业化？要是商业化的话，我需要买他们的license？
另外一个问题，商业化对我有什么好处？学校会给我投资吗？

If it's successfully commercialized, most US institutions would give you a
cut of up to 1/3.
But from your description, I don't see a commercial future of this work.
A) Is there a technological entry barrier? Probably not.
B) You need licenses to use KEGG etc for commercial use, probably costing
more than you possibly earn.
C) If you charge a fee, your academic users (>99.9% of your users?) will go
to other places (there are plenty of them).

大牛们都不收费 (bioconductor, bioperl, gbrowser, UCSC)，如何轮得到你收费？

上面这话有所偏激。
我的观点是：软件几乎别想赚钱，因为，软件没有解决问题。
能解决整个问题的solution可以赚钱，单个的工具几乎都是免费的。

学校会投资，但是成功率不高。我们搞过一次，找了个patent lawyer讨论了一下，因
为觉得市场不大，就不了了之。接触一下没坏处。
另外商业化的软件也有academic license.

If your school wants to apply for patents based on your work, go ahead do it
, preferably before the paper is published. Whether it eventually makes
money, nobody knows and the odds are against it :) At least it would make
your CV look better :)
How many queries do you get from your website now? If it's significant, you
can insert ads on your site using Google AdSense and making some pocket
money :D
Do you see number of ads here on MITBBS? we bring the traffic here, but
never get to share the money!
