小弟在美top 50的电子系念博士生, 已经拿到硕士学位了, 现在是第三年开头...
因为在funding上, 目前的项目有一些问题, 然后还有我对自己的电子工程的软件方向
失去兴趣了... 之前毕业的师兄就业前景也不好..., 博士毕业去做与专业无关的代码
民工, 在New York 附近也才8万年薪...
经过朋友介绍, 有机会去申请Finance PhD, 但是这个项目找人很少, 而且即使申请到
学校排名会比较靠后 (七八十名? )
不过听朋友介绍, 即使排名比较靠后的Finance PhD, 虽然不容易找教职, 但是就业也
不错, 起薪也有10+万吧...
做电子工程写代码的是混青春饭的, 升职希望小, 不升职的话, 四五十岁肯定就干不动
了. 做Finance 专业是不是会有更加好的职业前途?

Differences:
1) FreeBSD is a whole system(kernal + user land) while Liunx is a kernal.
2) kernel is seperated from application
3) Upgrade the system is easy. Did your application break when you
upgrade
your linux distribution?
4) More stable than Linux
5) vi is not vim; make is not gmake. it is UNIX
6) simpler configruation, no run levels
7) no native flash player. Flash 7 works fine. Flash 9 doesn't work
8) aircrack-ng doesn't work
9) Freebsd ports are good. b

我目前只是有这个意向而已, 至于能不能申请到Finance 也只是想试试看碰碰运气吧...
毕竟现在这个项目念得很不顺利, 和导师关系也不好, 经常要加班超负荷工作, 而且
funding也不稳定, 所以一直有跳槽的想法. 想到既然要跳, 是不是干脆跳出工程领域,
去找更适合的念呢?
我现在这个工程系项目毕业的师兄有去加州写C++的, 有去企业给开发网站后台应用的
之类的. 而且他们找工作都是费了很大力气才找到的, 而且都是只有一个工作offer就
匆匆忙忙的赶紧接受了的那种, 所以我感觉我目前这个项目毕业后找工作其实不易.
虽然double E 电子工程听起来不错, 但是里面有很多小的子专业.
而我们的小专业偏向软件方向, 是搞算法开发,只写Matlab的那种, 基本上就是把简单
的统计理论应用到模拟出来的工程数据上, 说白了也就是做理论, 和工业界的应用距离
很大. 所以, 之前毕业的师兄基本上在用自己本科学到的写代码的本领找工作...

Yes, both in FreeBSD and linux distributions.
Try Slackware.
That's why it is ports, not pkg_add.

If you came out right after college, you are only ~25 yrs old. If this is
true, why not give it a shot? Work hard for 1 yr to see if you can get in,
if yes, good. If not, no regret. Not many people can really give you
suggestion b/c personal experience/background/capability differs.

true, why not give it a shot? Work hard for 1 yr to see if you can get in,
if yes, good. If not, no regret. Not many people can really give you
suggestion b/c personal experience/background/capability differs.

It is EXTREMELY hard to get in PHD finance program. Your background is not
strong. But why not give yourself a try? I suggest you also try PHD in
accounting program.

the competition in Finance is fierce, I guess I can only focus on small and
not-so-famous finance programs in ordinary public schools.
Is it worth the extra time if I can only wish to get the PhD. Finance offer
in a tier-3 (rank 50 ~ 100) university?
Or is it better to stick to the program despite the difficulties and gloom
future and to get the EE PhD as soon as possible?

I think people here usually don't know much about the future for an EE Phd..
But you should be aware that for finance PhDs graduating from tier-3
departments, the normal job is a teaching position, so make sure that is
something you want/like to do. Other than that, I think it won't hurt to try.

finance的PhD不好读，比起其他专业(非商学院）辛苦很多。
finance的PhD不好申请，即使是100名的。除非你有名校的经济硕士。
另外，如果拿到了EE PhD在申请也许会有帮助。
如果有很多Paper,恭喜你，你可以展示一下你的research能力，或许会帮助你。
一些重要的课:microeconomics (at least Master level), econometrics/ advanced
regression/ stochastic processes/ differential equation/ real analysis 会帮
助你脱颖而出！
