Yes, just bring your materials and check/money order/... No need of reservation.
I once did it in New York Consulate, just walk in early in the morning.
After two hours' wait in the hall, they call your number and you collect the
visa. Another time in Los Angeles, submit app in the morning and then
collect visa at 2 pm same day. Generalizing from these two samples, with
high probability, Detroit consulate will also give you the visa on the same
day.

我记得当时邮寄的casher's check
貌似不收personal check吧？

right, they only accept cashier's check (no personal check).

i've got my canadian visa!
thanks so much folks!
it was easy, just walk in the detroit consulate, and it took 2 hour. i
submitted my application materials at 8:30am, and came back at 10:30 to get
it.

she didn't even talk to me.... i prepared everything the consulate website
asked for, around 10 items (forms, support letter, i20, proof of enrollment,
financial statement,photos, passport, etc)
just slip those application materials into the window 2, and pay in cash
there, then came back in 10：30 to get it.
