BIOMEDICAL EXPLANATION OF ACUPUNCTURE(ZZ)# ChineseMed - 中医

I now discuss some of the Chinese Classical literature and prep the patient
mentally:
The Huang Di Nei Jing states that the organs produce Qi and that the Qi of
the
different organs have differing functions. However, in healthy people the Qi
of
each organ feeds and balances the receiving organ. This Qi must then travel
from
the Organs to nourish the ends of the fingers, nose, toes, and brain. So, we
have this simplified idea of Qi from the Huang Di Nei Jing. But the magic
questions are, “What is Qi?” “What is a Meridian?” and “What is an
Acupucture
point?”, and then “How does Acupuncture work?”
Now I want you to switch your thinking from the Chinese thought pattern to
the
Western science way of thinking. I want to tell you right now that Qi can be
measured. I know there are many MDs and scientists that will tell you that
they
have autopsied many cadavers and never has anything resembling the
Acupuncture
meridian system been found. (I then ask the patient if they have “seen”
gravity. Then I drop a pencil on the floor and show them evidence that it
exists) I then tell them to go to their local electrical store and buy a
simple
ohm meter and rub it across their skin. They will find many areas on the
skin
with lesser resistance than other areas, these are the meridians and
acupuncture
points.
*(Special Note for Acupuncturists: All practitioners know of acupuncture
point
finders, and some know of the Acugraph Meridian Graphing Device. When these
devices are put on an acupuncture point there is a signaling device that
tells
you that you have found it. Question: These machines accurately find the
points. What do these devices measure? Answer: Electrical resistance in the
tissue. What kind of resistance? Electrical. Therefore, Qi must be……(what?
)
ELECTRICAL. If Qi is not, then you couldn’t have a device to measure it,
right?
)
Let’s explain what Qi is now. To do this we have to discuss modern cell
physiology. All cells in the human or animal body have a cell membrane made
of
lipids (cholesterol) and imbedded in the cell membrane are active transport
pumps. This is how the cell gets waste out of the cell and nutrients into
the
cell. Inside the cell we have the nucleus and a little organelle called the
mitachondria. This is the power plant of the cell. When protein enters the
cell
and touches the mitachondria, it is quickly converted into ATP (adenosine
triphosphate). Immediately, the cell cleaves the second phosphate chain from
the ATP molecule to produce ADP. When that phosphate chain is cleaved from
the
ATP molecule and little charge of energy is spun around the cell called the
Cell
Membrane Potential. This is an electrical charge that can be measured in the
millionths of an amp (and can actually be measured). This is Qi. It is the
cumulative cell membrane potential of all the cells of your body. In the
Bible
it is called Ruach. It is the very “spark” of life.
Now, what tissues in the body contain the most cells per cubic millimeter?
In
other words, what are the densest tissues in the body? Well, it would be
your
organs; liver, kidneys, etc.
Let’s keep this in mind while we now think of modern physics. One of the
laws
of physics states that electricity must always flow from areas of high
concentration to areas of low concentration; electricity cannot flow against
a
gradient from a low concentration to a high concentration, right?
That being said, let’s now go back to what the Huang Di Nei Jing stated, “
Each
organ generates its own Qi.” Remember? That means that the Qi has a higher
concentration there in the Organs. But remember, the Nei Jing said that this
Qi
must get to and nourish the fingers, the nose, toes and the brain. Right?
Well, how does it do this? It uses the meridian systems.
Think of it this way. You have electricity in your house, right? This
electricity powers your toaster, refrigerator, air conditioner, etc. Now the
functions of these pieces of equipment is different, but the power is the
same.
Right? But it’s still electricity. Remember, Chinese theory says that we
are a
microcosm of the macrocosm. If that is truth, then there truly is nothing
new
under the sun. A city can be seen as a cell. It produces power, has a
transportation system, storage system, and disposes of waste, etc. That
being
the case, how far does the power generation plant have to be from your house
, or
a city for that matter, for you to get the benefits of electricity? It can
be
hundreds, even a thousand miles away. But this presents a problem for the
power
companies, doesn’t it? What happens to the electricity when it leaves the
power
plant and travels down the power lines? It lessens doesn’t it? Due to the
resistance in the power lines the electricity lessens. This presents a
problem
for the power companies. They can’t generate limitless amounts of
electricity.
So, what do the power companies do to keep the power up and balanced so it
can
get to our houses and businesses for us to use?
Well, they use step-up stations with transformers to keep the power balanced.
That is what an Acupuncture point is; it’s simply a step-up station to keep
the
Qi consistent and balanced so our tissues can be nourished and kept healthy.
Now we know what Qi is, what an Acupuncture point is, and what a meridian is
.
So how does Acupuncture work? Well Acupuncture works on many levels and in
many
ways. However, I personally only know 3 of the ways that Acupuncture works,
and
I’ll explain one of those ways right now.
Let’s go back to the electric company, or cable company if you like. What
happens if you don’t pay your bill for a month or two? They cut your power
or
cable off, don’t they? Do they have to go to your house to do it? No, they
have switching stations that can turn the power off. That’s what some of
the
Acupuncture points are, they are switching stations. That’s why when
someone
comes to me with a migraine in the temple area, I find a sore spot between
the
4th and 5th toes and when I put a needle in it, the headache is gone
immediately. If the headache is over the eyes, I find a sore spot between
the
2nd and 3rd toes and that headache is immediately gone. These are the
switching
stations for those types of pain. The skill of an acupuncturist is in his
knowledge of where these switching stations are. Do you understand?
