刚搞了一台SUN enterprise 3500, 8个CPU, 5G RAM.
我们打算用它来搞 CFD simulation, 主要是大量的
浮点计算。
结果速度令人失望,仅仅和AMD 3000+的台式机差不多。
是不是我们的设置有问题。高手能否指点以下?

It depends on your CPU and code. In my case, the speed of AMD 2800+ is
equivalent to 2*600Mhz SGI MIPS CPUs. If you're using 200MHz CPUs, it's
normal that the Sun is slower than AMD one.:)

But it's 8 Ultra Sparc II 375Mhz CPUs. I worry about that I may set up
something wrong. The CPU usage is always 60-85%. not 100%, not constant.
Maybe there's somethign wrong.

This is normal.We had 12-CPU 4000. It has been replace by dual Xeon cluster
more than a year ago and it has not been used for a while.

Hmm, let's see, asssuming double precision floating point code:
For Sun SMPs,
375 (clock speed) * 2 (flops per cycle) * 8 (cpu number) = 6 Gflops
For AMD 3000+ (2.8GHz I assume?),
2.8G (clock speed) * 2 (flops per cycle) = 5.6 Gflops
So they have roughly the same peak FP performance. Considering SMP will be
usually harder to achive the same effiency comparing to one single CPU, what
you see is just normal.
Ultra Sparc sucks at FP computations, simply due to Sun's "portability"
strategy at design
