有啊，HD-DVD现在不是就标准问题吵得正凶呢。也主要是两大流派。sony连样盘都做出来
了。不过如果按照DVD的发展过程来估算，起码得4，5年以后才可能上市，如果顺利的话
。

my view is solid state meory will achieve affordable 5G in 3 years,
at that time DVD might start fading just as CD today

Why CD is fading today? Because of mp3? Nah...
The same thing to DVD. Those "high quality" dvdrip avi or something could
never compete with a well packed DVD, IMO. HD-DVD would eventually replace DVD
for sure, but needs a long time.

for audio, cd is a grandma technology although its software abundance
makes it still upbeat, just like tape, however it is fading with dvd-audio
and hdcd
dvdrip avi is somehow a shortcut with mpeg4, merely compression tweaks, the
development of solid state mem makes things easier to operate and transport,
thinking of this, a stamp size 5gb secure digital card would be affordable
in next four years, and it is fast, capable of rewrite and copy protectable,
why do people need to carry a dish size

I doubt it. For non-audiophiles, CD offers good enough sound quality at
44.1-kHz/16-bit. DVD-Audio and SACD appeal to golden ears. I think HDCD is
a hype without much credibility. People listening to boomboxes know better.
There are too many myths. As an engineer, I just do not understand how
DVD-Audio, SACD deliver 24-bit sound (perhaps while the electrnoics is
immersed in liquid Nitrogen?).

That's what I want to say. If major users can easily tell the advantage of
DVD-audio or HDCD over CD, CD would go down. But that's almost impossible to
happen. The quality of CD is already near perfect for major consumers. Unlike
DVD vs. VHS and HD-DVD vs. DVD, when people start using HDTV, the difference
is easy to tell.

I think you made the wrong comparasion here. That kind of digital card or
something is just a media storage. The DVD we talk here is not that simple,
it's a kind of home entertainment standard. To replace a standard is far more
complicated and difficult. I don't see any possiblity it would replace DVD. As
if you have a 1Gb flashcard or memory stick which is large enough to hold high
quality audio, would it replace CD? Not at all.
And don't look down on that shiny plastic disk:), it's so durable

sometimes the software matters, sometime the current copyright system
deployed music/film industry stinks, they failed to pursuit the new tech
advance unless it becomes a reality. CD was overwhelmingly successful coz it
solved the lossless audio reproduction, DVD was introduced to sell video.
but what's next? in my point it is the true multimedia on your palmtop, you
need a medium to carry audio, video and do them interactively. to me it's the
solid state mem tech will champion.

of audio and video so you can easily pick one? Nowadays 5gb digital boombox is
already below $200, which could hold hundreds of near cd quality mp3s, and
it's small like a portable CD player. But it could never hurt CD, IMO. Like
palm could never replace a PC even if it's as powerful as a PC.
Or maybe eventually what you said would happen, but that sounds too 22nd
century to me.

The industry has every reason to milk the cow as many times as possible. But
consumers do not have to be slaves of technologies, however advanced.
New storage devices may be superior to CDs. So what? With my CD collection,
I have every reason to resist the migration. Unless they stop publishing CDs
at all. I do not see that happening soon.
I buy CDs to listen to them time after time. I could care less about whatever
features ou there.

time CD came into the market when analogue media still dominated the market,
the similiar debates were always there. since HMV age, audio industry has
been there for quite a while, and everyone, including musician, label owner,
producer and end user, has this or that reasons to resist what will happen,
why, to me it is partly because of investment protection, partly because
golden old days were always perfect. so we still ha

no way. 30 years is more likely. also 5G is not enough for HD, 20-50G is
required.

better.
why would DVD have 5.1 or 7.1 audio? people will also want that for CD, and
SACD, DVD-A is the answer.
The quality of CD is already near perfect for major consumers. Unlike
