In the studio i take classes, there are two groups of teachers:
- international style pros who compete/competed (let me call them "real pros
").
- american style pros who never compete (or maybe social style pros?). I
know there are real american style pros like Ben and Charlene Ermis; the
group i am talking about are not; they give me the impression that they are
self-claimed pros. Of course competition is not the defining factor to be a
pro, but you can tell that some teachers did not have str

last night i just saw a "social-style" pro leading about 20 people
dance chacha basic to music in the "1-2-chacha-cha" way
i knew she's not that good. but i'd never expect any pro dance, or
teach people to do 1-2-chacha-cha

How come you did not mention anything about the American style professionals
who are also dancesport competitors? I will bet they are pretty good, too.
Tony Dovolani is pretty good.
And I think you are right about the leading and following. I think it was me
who suggested to blindfold the girls and dance with them. Or even better,
let’s blindfold both of them, and see how that goes :) For competitive
dancing, I have always felt very strongly about each dancer dancing his/her
own part. (it makes

Oh isn't that great!
A social style pro once taught cha cha: there's a lot turns as if you were
doing salsa; there is no weight transfer at all; all the girls stand on
their balls all the time...

This is very educational. Thx! And my prelim thinking is confirmed!
Yeah, i am not familar with the american style latin so the top dancers'
names fail me (but chalene and ben ermis are smooth stars). I think Tony
Dovolani was featured in PBS's last year's Ohio Star Ball.
It's gonna be so fun to blindfold a leader and a follower and see what
happens - did you try that?
"One should feel not only what the other person is giving him/her but also
what he/she is giving back from his/her own body move

I find these (aurae’s and sensualgirl’s) interesting comments very
observant and thoughtful. It is exactly what I have been wondering about
over the weekend. I’d love to hear what other girls have to say about the
hold pressure and the tightness of connection.
At a team social last Friday, two not-so-high level girls on our team
complained to me that my holds were too light and they couldn’t feel the
exact lead and found me hard to follow. Nevertheless, contrary to their
expectation they felt th

This is a nice reflection on this topic, from the point of view of standard
dancing. sensual_girl and I were talking about latin. So we have both here.
Don't get baffled :) They, at a lower level than you, simply do not "have
the right technique to accept the better leading" - this has become clear,
as pointed out by sensual_girl.
I think your 'two sides to the coin" comment would apply if you want to
partner with the lower-level followers. Please do come back to discuss your
experiment.
