My secondary teacher introduced a potential partner to me (she feels it is
likely to work). I've never had a tryout before. My only experience was
chatting with a potential partner and I didn't like that person's style, so
never moved to the next step.
Do you have valuable suggestions? What are the top three things to look in
the short try-out? Motivation, dance potential, and taste?

i sure will consider that...com'on guys. no kidding. i don't have time to
dance probably for another month but i can try out. do u quickly put
together a short routine and try each dance?

definitely，其实一个小的routine就足以看出是否match，是否对方有talent，etc

我觉得挑一个舞伴，除了他/她现在的level，最重要的是，他/她愿意花多少时间练习
，以及短期内的比赛计划。
其实很多所谓talent的东西都可以靠练习获得，当然splits之类的除外－splits得从小
抓起，呵呵。
最后就是你得喜欢和你的舞伴跳舞/练习－这点可能得接触久了才有定论。不过如果刚
开始就不喜欢，那就不用费事了。

thx. then i need to put together 5 routines for the 5 dances respectively...
it's like a mini test, hah? :) and i am also gonna be tested.

thank you. i am smiling when you say "除了他/她现在的level". This person has
a higher "nominal" level, but according to my teacher, is not that much
advanced than me. Actually I don't know what my level is - never competed
officially. It all depends on what system you quote from. I recall somebody
posted a silver champion clip from the National amateur comp, and i asked if
some collegiate gold (or even prechamp) dancers do better than that silver,
and the answer is no. I don't wanna lie but don't wanna

I don't think you need put together 5 routines for this, especialy that you
will follow. Only a few basic steps will do and you can get a feeling of his
musicality, movement, posture, sense of dancing, and potential. Compatible
personality is also very important.
Well, I am just 纸上谈兵. :P Never had a real tryout myself.

no, nominal level never counts, only the real level matters, :)
If I am choosing a lady as my partner...and if she has a much higher nominal
level, i probably wouldn't have her as my partner simply because she doesn'
t have a objective opinion about her own dancing, and she may very likely
not willing to put effort in improving her basics. That could be due to her
previous partner and/or coach though.

that sounds comforting to me! I was concerned if I'll scare people away when
i say i am almost a beginner (focusing on refining the basic figures)
before they see my potentials, you know :)

我同意，splits这个东西很impress ppl的。
高中时候认过个把小妹妹，其中一个会劈叉，而且劈的巨直那种
服！

其实他现在的level不是那麽重要，除非你已经是at least prechamp或很好的，gold
dancers了，两个人专心练舞，一星期上一次private，如果只练一个style的话，一年
内level的差距就没有了。
还是两个人对跳舞的想法比较重要，两个人的financial situation，能投子给跳舞的
时间是否相当，个性等等。
tryout的时候，没有必要有routine，lead and follow是一个很好的开始，过了一回之
后，如果感觉还可以，可以试着跳一小段routine，不过一般都是男生lead他的routine
，遇到一些不容易follow的,再告诉我。
