last night I try to install Oracle 8.1.6
every thing goes fine except the last step
when it run the configuration tool,
the error message is "ORA-03114: not connected to ORACLE"
then I ignore it.
after the installation, I use svrmgrl to start the database
, the message is always "120 sec timeout"
I need help.
Please give me some advice.

Do your installation pass the "Net* configuration" step?

Do you have the DOMAIN NAME for your IP address?
Oracle suppose that your have such a set up for the global
name of Oracle database.
If not, please check teh installtion guide about how to set
up the global name.

THanks , But the problem still exists.
The error occur after the Net8 setup, actually in the DB
creation
step, I have already setup a global database name which is
my name,
while the domain name of my machine is totally different
from that.
What should I do? I got crazy these nights.
Anyway, I appreciate your help.

this is a bug in Oracle for NT (the first set up will fail).
Please run the whole set up again. This time, the problem
will be solved.
Or, you can pass the create Db step. Then you can creat the
sample DB by using the
Db assistant later.

I have installed Oracle for Linux 5 times. Every time when
it goes to
the Initializing database, error: not connect to Oracle.
Then I run dbassist instead, the same error.
When I use svrmgrl to start my database, after 'startup',
the error
is 'ORA-00445: background process "PMON" did not start after
120 seconds'
when I use sqlplus to log on as 'system', the error is
'ORA-01034: ORACLE not available'
'ORA-27101: shared memory realm does not exist'
'Linux Error: 2: No such file or directory '

I guess you should check your oracle connection file (server end
/etc, client end oralce-root-dir/network/admin, tnsnames.ora) to
ensure your database and connection descriptor are already in it.
Refer to Oracle DBA's Handbook, Chapter 13, 14.
