How is `may have' used?
People sometimes say something may have happened, meaning there was a
possibility of it happening, although it did not in fact happen:
The heroin may have gone undetected if the boat had not had fuel
problems. (newspaper report)
The babies may have survived if treatment had continued.
(newspaper report)
This use is generally thought to be wrong. Instead of `may have', it is
thought that you should use might have in sentences like th
