R01 was not funded, with score 1, 2 and 2.5. My boss told me the renewing
R01 grant was assigned into merit zone.
Is there really a merit zone?

R01 score range is 10-90.
How come you get a score of 1?

Scores means nothing. It is percentile from the study section that matters.
If you are talking about the NIH merit award i.e. 10 year R01 (I know two
people who has the award), the grant has to be scored below 0.5 percentile.

How could that be possible to have a percentile of < 0.5%?
How many applicants do certain study section review for that year on Merit
Award? <0.5% means it has to be > 200 proposals.
It this even possible? I don't think so.

read the guideline published by NIH? My former boss has score near that
range.

过去3次study sections的分来平均,一年3次,study section,也就是过去一年的平均.
A percentile is the approximate percentage of applications that received a
better overall impact/priority score from the study section during the past
year.

你自己写过NIH proposal吗？你还是自己先好好读读nih percentile是如何确定的吧
从来没有见过<1 percentile的。

I agree. One of my recent NIH proposals got priority score 10. (all scores
of all the reviewers are 1). Its percentile is still 1 percentile (not < 1
percentile). Just for your information.

My post-doc advisor's best RO1 is .65% and our collaborator who have score
of 10 recieved below .5%. I have them to use as template for my grants.
It depends on your study section. My department has a pretty wide field, I
have seen grants with all 2s barley getting scored. I asked the PI and he
told me you need mostly 1s to get funded. My study section 20 is 3% and 1s
according to senior faculties who served on the same study section are
rarely given.
I really don't care through, I just want to be funded. As long as the
percentile is under the Payline, I'm happy.
