My current verizon wireless plan will expire soon. I want to switch to
Cingular's plan. Does anybody know if I can keep my old number after switch?

you can keep your number.
Cingular use different wireless system, you won't be able to use your
Verizon phone anymore.

Remember to keep verizon service until your number transfer is completed.
