3-year tax returns are mainly to prove that applicant's income meets the
requirements.
If I-485 is employment-based, applicant's salary info from LC/employer is
sufficient and probably much higher than the minimum income requriement.
But if I-485 is family-based, or the applicant needs to sponsor his/her spouse
and child(ren), tax returns are generally required to prove the income meets
the minimum requirement for the entire family.
Tax return printouts can be abtained through 800 phone service
requirements.
