There is subtle difference between the criteria for 1A and 1B: it is about the alien for 1A and it is about the alien's work for 1B. Most of the NewsRx reports focus on some new findings rather than the author(s). Hence, such reports fit better for 1B. You still can use these reports as hard evidence for the contribution part in your 1A petition, although it is hard to claim media report with just NewsRx. It really depends on the IO who looks at your case. Unless your case is super strong, luck sometimes overrides qualification. Some universities have subscription to certain online publications, including some NewsRx titles. I found a few when I prepared my petition.
