Union members ratify federal contractor's agreement
FCi Federal reached a five-year collective bargaining agreement with workers
at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service's Nebraska Service Center
in Lincoln, the first agreement for those employees who organized during the
summer.
The agreement, reached early Thursday morning between the federal contractor
and leaders of Local 808 of the United Electrical, Radio and Machine
Workers of America, moves to a ratification vote Friday by approximately 300
workers.
Jason Whisler, a union field organizer said negotiations lasted until 4 a.m.
Thursday "as both sides fought hard to reach a fair agreement, just hours
before workers were prepared to walk off the job, beginning at 6 a.m."
He said the agreement guarantees yearly wage increases, including well over
5 percent total increased compensation in the first year, guaranteed
benefits, and strong language protecting workers' rights. Ratification votes
will be Friday, he said. The union had made a wage increase, the first in
five years, a priority.
The employees enter data, maintain and coordinate files, perform mail-room
duties and other work for the USCIS contractor.
"Today's agreement is vital to providing the stability and continuity at the
Nebraska Service Center needed to appropriately serve the immigration
population that relies on the critical records-keeping services provided by
FCi Federal," said Sharon D. Virts, chief executive of FCi Federal, in a
news release. "We are pleased to have reached an agreement that acknowledges
our employees' desire for fair compensation and, at the same time, is
indicative of the fiscal responsibility on which the Company prides itself."
FCi Federal of Ashburn, Virginia, began its tenure as lead contractor
operating the center, which provides record-keeping and document-processing
services for immigrants in the United States, earlier this month. The
company began negotiating with the union this week.
The accord is the second collective bargaining agreement reached between FCi
Federal and unions representing its employees in October. Last week,
workers at the USCIS California Service Center ratified a new, five-year
agreement with FCi Federal.
