Texas Tech University in Lubbock was put on lockdown Monday after an officer
was killed in a shooting at the police station, the university said.
Texas Tech police chief Kyle Bonath confirmed to CBS News that a shooting
took place on campus and an officer had been hit. University spokesman Chris
Cook said the officer was killed.
Cook said that officers found evidence of drugs and drug paraphernalia
during a standard welfare check, and they brought the suspect to the police
station. The suspect then shot and killed the officer, Cook said. The
suspect fled on foot and was in custody by 10:30 ET.

A call for a student "welfare check" led campus officers to a room where
they found drugs and drug paraphernalia, prompting the officers to take the
student to the station, a spokesman for the school said in a statement.
"During this time, the suspect pulled a gun and shot an officer in the head,
" the statement read. "The officer is deceased."
The suspect then fled on foot, authorities said. The school tweeted out that
anyone on campus should "shelter in place" just before 8 p.m. CT (9 p.m. ET
).
