I woke up in a strange place with a headache and no memory of last
night. As usual, I reached for the iNag in my pocket. It was covered by
dust as was my hair, my face, my jacket, and ... “Shit, where are my
pants?”
“Woke up in some stranger’s backyard. Covered in dust. Pants missing.”
I jotted down on the iNag the latest entry to my “WTF happened last
night “ log.
I tried to run but my legs felt like lead. I walked and walked until a
shabby diner showed up by the roadside. My stomach growled

“Here’s your food, ma’am!”
A skinny woman showed up by my table. I looked up. All my appetite was
gone in an instant with the sight of her face. I had thought, after
dealing with countless villains, murderers, psychos of the kind throughout
my career, nothing in the world could have such an effect on my nerves any
more. But there I was, soul scared out of body, looking at a woman whose
face would make Satan seem friendly.

"Anything else you need?" She asked.
"Nah. I'm good." I turned to the other side as soon as I finished the
sentence.
I waited until her footsteps completely disappeared behind the kitchen
door, and turned to the food. "Err!" I grunted and pushed the plate away.
"We do refill." The fatty behind the counter snorted, obnoxiously.

I ignored, with an effort. I had more important things to do. I needed to
find Liz. She was my only hope to get out of this fucking place. I took
out the iNag, still no signal. I was getting anxious. It had lost
connections before but usually came back in less an hour. “This can’t be
happening.” I positioned it closer to the window in desperation… still no
bars.

“You know where 544 Phoenix is?” I handed a ten to the fatty. She paid
no attention.
“You know where 544 Phoenix is?” I dangled another twenty before her and
raised my voice. I got her attention this time.
“South to the second light. Four blocks on your left.” she answered with
the fewest possible words before snatching the bill off my hand. She
looked around stealthily and stuffed the money inside her dirty apron.

“What the hell is this?”
Standing in front of me was a half deserted building. I looked again. The
door tag did say “544 Phoenix Pl”. I walked to a window and peeked inside.
The room was barely furnished. The floor was littered with empty beer
bottles. The only color I saw was from an old poster on the wall where a
curvy woman in red was showing off her cleavage. Her face looked familiar.
I lost in my thought trying to remember where I had seen her.

hoping to lure it outside. I needed to find a way into the building and
thought the cat might help. The creature was obviously still mad at me
because of the kick earlier at the café. More strangely, it gave me a “I-
know-what-you-want, beg-me-and-I-will-think-about-it” look before turning

I was running out of sweet words to say and growing restive. The creature
stood still like a stubborn rock. Then, out of dire desperation, I
resorted to something I did the best: I started singing and dancing, to
the butt of a cat. My reflection looked ridiculous in the window. The
fact that I was pantless made it all the worse.

The creature led me crawling through some dark vents, finally coming down
through the ceiling. A pungent urine smell blew straight in my face as
soon as I entered the room. “WTF is the stink? It’s fucking worse than my
fart.” I cried out.
The cat paid no attention to my complaints and walked on. I tiptoed
carefully, not wanting to risk stepping on whatever shit on the floor that
gave off the smell.
We stopped in front of where might have been a fireplace centuries ago.

“Who on earth could have been here?” I asked, as much to myself as to the
cat. It replied with a long cry almost too sad to bear. I picked it
up and patted gently on its back. “It's okay, cutie. I’m sure…” My words
were interrupted by a sudden blow to the back of my head. Before I could
make out what was happening the force had blacked me out completely.
