贫穷的含义---down and out in Paris and London# LeisureTime - 读书听歌看电影

乔治奥威尔早期的作品:down and out in Paris and London,讲他在巴黎和伦敦经历
“A plongeur is a slave, and a wasted slave, doing stupid and unnecessary
work. He is kept at work because of a vague feeling that he would be
dangerous if he had leisure.”
“An educated man can put up with enforced idleness, which is one of the
worst evils of poverty. But a man like Paddy, with no means of filling up
time, is as miserable out of work as a dog on the chain.”
“(tramps) are ordinary human beings. And that if they are worse than other
people it is the result not the cause of their way of life.”
“He has neither fear, nor regret, nor shame, nor self-pity. He has faced
his position, and made a philosophy for himself. Being a beggar, he said,
was not his fault, and he refused either to have any compunction about it or
to let it trouble him.”
“He had managed to keep his brain intact and alert, and so nothing could
make him succumb to poverty. He might be ragged and cold, or even starving,
but so long as he could read, think and watch for meteors, he was, as he
said, free in his own mind.”
“Our intention in swearing is to shock and wound, which we do by mentioning
something that should be kept secret—usually something to do with sexual
functions. But the strange thing is that when a word is well established as
a swear word, it seems to lose its original meaning.”
Homage to Catalonia.

Catalonia,

Why I Write》:
"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written,
directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic
socialism, as I understand it."
