Marco Rubio certainly didn't have a patent on “American dream”,
but he really represents a plebeian can achieve “American dream”. Marco
Rubio is from a working class Cuban immigrant family. His father was a bar
tender and his mother was a hotel house keeper. His competitor Kendrick Meek
is the son of retired congresswoman Carrie P. Meek, that really made a big
difference. Although, the current situation in the USA is not optimistic,
the “American dream” is the spirit of the USA, and the reason why many
people have been coming here for hundreds of years.
In James Trslow Adams's famous book “the American dream”, he said
for everyone with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.
It is a difficult dream for European upper classes to interpret adequately,
and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is
not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order
in which each man and woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature
of which they are innately capable and be recognized by others for what they
are, regardless of fortuitous circumstance of birth or position.” The
meaning is vague, because “American Dream” is based on everyone's dream.
“America dream” is not a guarantee, it is opportunities that we can catch.
This is the greatest country to chase dreams. It is not because of the
wealth of this country, it is because the freedom of thinking and equality.
So many people who have come here believed in their dreams and have made
their dreams become true.
A big of part of the “American dream” is home-ownership. After
the housing market fell apart, Americans started to blame all the people
involved in this housing market. Governors, politicians, financial adviser
and so on. But we are as American citizens and residents, we should be blame
ourselves as well. Overspending is a big problem in this country. Bigger
houses are better, luxury cars are more comfortable, bigger TVs are more
enjoyable. This country became a big spending machine. Regardless of
President Bush's house down payment plane. Americans believed they could buy
a house that they dreamed about, but the house they couldn't afford.
Overspending is a big reason destroyed this housing market. Everyone wanted
to enjoy this great land and forgot to spend within their budget.
In “Fantasy Politics” from New York Times, Christopher Caldwell
said : A polling results released by Xavier University last winter showed
new immigrants to be among the biggest believers in the American dream. It
wasn't a surprise. Two hundreds years ago, plebeian Europeans came into this
country, they started from nothing. Hopeless in their own countries, they
worked as hard as they could, as many hours as they needed to built this
great country. All the hard works, and all the hopes they putted for the
future generations. Americans got benefits and they became spoiled. New
immigrants came here have the same spirits as the old immigrants of the
passed, they work hard as much as they can, because they believe it and they
don't have as much as requirements as Americans. It is the dream they
believe no matter what they do that they can reach and pass to their
children. It is not about wealthiness and luxury life. It is the dream based
on hard work and hunger, hopes and imaginations of the future. American
dream is not just a dream, it is the opportunities that we are willing to
catch with our hard work and our strong believe.
After this big recession, Americans became angrier and angrier. “
American Dream” became unclear and unstable for Americans. Is it the dream
for Americans? Or it is the dream for people who come here from other
countries give up everything they can to achieve?
