请教：是找有名气但对自己不熟的老教授，还是找刚毕业不久但在自己dissertation
committee的新junior faculty 写reference letter?
也就是说找人写推荐信哪个因素最重要？：
* 有名
* 对自己熟
* 与advisor熟

正在找薄厚, 看有些老板要求申请的时候写一个research statement, 感觉上不需要写
得深刻与完美, 主要是idea和语言. 大家写过吗? 有没有什么经验之谈?

刚收到一封信，里面只有一张貌似支票，好像是财政部（Dept Treasury）签发的。
很奇怪啊，几个月前我已经收到过退税了。
大家是不是也收到了？三百块，这么整的数，大概人人都有？？

Your advisor has to write one for you. Hopefully, the letters can portray
you from different perspectives: like one would emphasize your research, one
would emphasize your teaching, and one would portray you as a person with
good personality...so on and so forth. It is important to find some one who
can portray you in a very positive way. That is my opinion. I would not
prefer to use a letter who talked about me in a very neutral way (like he or

how do i know if someone is going to write a strong letter for me?
especially for famous people who won't say explicitly that he is going to
write a strong letter.

I think it is fine to have one letter from a famous professor if you can
find one. That type of professor may have very neutral comments about your.
However, based on my experiences, the sites would like to see letters from
professors who know you pretty well. They want to hire some one that they
have to work for years. If I was a chair, I would never want to hire some
one who can do high-quality research, but has very harsh personality to work
