我很喜欢狄更斯。他所有的作品都看过。当年拿出积攒邮票的精神，到处找。
他的风格大概还是写实的比较多，偏偏又夹带着一种玩童式的浪漫主义，显得他的作品好
象没那么深刻。大概是年纪小，反而喜欢这样的小说。现在还记得看大卫的时候，是和绝
代双娇一起看的，书的封面都破碎了。
欧洲国家里，英国的气质和东方的儒雅含蓄最接近，大概这就是为什么虽然他们的文字有
些累赘，却仍然留在我们的心里。

第一本看的英国小说就是《鲁宾逊漂流记》，大家没有忘了这本吧！
（实际上最先看的是小人书，然后才看了全本的）法国人米歇尔·图
尼埃后来写了一本《礼拜五，或太平洋上的虚无飘渺境》，出国前买
了却没来得及看。两本书一起看应该很有意思吧。对了，后来我才发
现这本书网上有下载，王道乾译的。
然后是《格列佛游记》，小时候看过小人书和动画片，以后也一直以
为是童话，直到真正看了原著才知道原来是讽刺作品啊！后来又看了
Swift的一些散文，才体会到为什么评价为“英国文学史上最伟大的
讽刺作家”。
由此想到英国人的幽默，最喜欢杰罗姆·Ｋ·杰罗姆了，当年在学校
图书馆看的劳陇翻译的《三怪客泛舟记》，这才叫好翻译！离开学
校，看过几个译本，可是一直到现在，实在没有看过那样好的翻译，
也没见过有卖那样好的译本了。
说起古典的，第一个想到《坎特伯雷故事集》，一提起它来就想起
《十日谈》。“幸运的拉伯雷时代，小说的蝴蝶腾空飞舞，随身带走
蚕蛹的碎片。”那个时代，幽默，神奇，机智，放纵，快乐……
大家放肆的讲着粗俗的笑话，人人兴高采烈、热热闹闹的活着。
意大利人帕索里尼根据这两部奇书拍成了同名电影，还有《一千零一

hardy reduced me to tears: his was saddest
a room with a view was most youthful & funny & romantic. in older age forster
added an alternative ending, made lucy & george unhappy ever after. he
supposed that was realistic. as if! if he wanted a realistic story, he
should have started from scratch and beginning.
more classics: henry fielding's tom jones, fanny burney's evelina, mary
shelley's frankenstein, forster's where angels fear to tread

嗯，偶喜欢迪更斯，当年有很长时间不愿意读他的书，就是被所谓的社会意义给
吓唬了，后来一读，真是喜爱，那样漂亮的文字真是让人忘怀，三姐妹的也读了，
没有特别喜爱的，几乎读了劳伦斯的所有作品，最喜欢的还是他那部查太莱，
嘻嘻。
毛姆的都读了，现在都忘了，哈哈。：）当年还很是喜爱他，看看偶真是喜新厌旧的。
年轻的时候看“看的见风景的房间”，"印度之旅“小说电影，现在是没耐心去补读福斯
特的“ Howard's end", 看了电影居然没有心思再看了。和和。
哈，看了福尔摩斯和阿加莎，发现英国文学很有意思。可以谈很久的呢。。:)
伍尔夫的"A Room of One's Own" 是三联出的绿皮封面的样子罢，如果偶的记忆还
好，一直后悔没带出来，很薄的一本，倒是偶年轻时候很喜欢的书。：）

the lovely "Alice in Wonderland". talk about british humor...:) and swift...
he is the original?
Is "catcher in the rye" british styled? I always think of it as American.
Its fluity feels a bit like fitzgerald. Holden fell into the lake in central
park, NYC, for starters! :D
Hubby loves Hardy religiously. He believes in Hardy. The bastard! (no, him,
not hardy....)
Pride and Prejudice by J. Austen. Reading Trainspotting. The movie is awesome, humored, and stylized by da

Katherine Mansfield--her life story was a legend, more intriguing to me
than her works. And her diary about the Blooomsburies, the interesting tension
between Mansfield and Virgina Woolf...
I did not know that there is a sequal to "a room with a view".
My idea of Foster's works comes mostly from Jame Ivory's movies.

还有人喜欢司各特哪, 呼呼, 想想俺当初高中的时候最喜欢
的就是司各特和狄更斯了. 那真是喜欢幻想的年代啊, 学农
的时候待在破破的泥屋里, 手里捧一卷司的"皇家猎宫", 心
早就飞到克伦威尔时代废弃破落的皇宫里去了... 整个高中
差不多把翻译过来的司各特的小说都看了, 那时最向往的就
是苏格兰的高地了, 到现在都是提到苏格兰先想到的是Rob
Roy, Waverley,... 倒不是什么勇敢的心. 到这里之后才知
道19世纪中美国风行他的小说, 有种说法是Civil War也脱
不了他的干系, 南方的骑士精神多半是他的小说煽动起来的,
Confederate将士们上前线带着两本书, 一本圣经, 还有一本
就是司各特的小说... 这时才想起来Mark Twain痛骂司各特
估计有这个原因.

"the catcher in the rye" was an american novel.
i mentioned "the go-between" was a british-styled "the catcher in the rye",
that is, "the go-between" was a british one yet shared similar topic with
american "the catcher in the rye". both explored youth and innocence
corrupted by time. you can see the distincts of the two cultures' from these
two. british wit was more passive, imo.

Hmmm... it will be interesting to read the alternative ending. I was attracted
by the exquisitely made movie "a room with a view" first. Then I dug out
"where angles fear to tread"(the book). My favorite Helena Bonham Carter was in both movies.
No one is interested in Thomas Hardy?
