I heard a Texas father-son team does this. I've never seen the finished
product, thus can't judge the quality though.

Some vendors suggest to place weight (such as unused planks) on the first
few rows of the floor once you're done laying them out. So I found your
experience a little bit odd.

there is space between the wall and first row, so if you don't lay heavy
stuff on it, when you knock the next row, the first row will move, so they
recommend putting some weight on the first few rolls. I did not do that, but
sure it is an option.
