几天前看家庭医生, 他决定帮我找一个specialist, 说找好了以后会打电话或寄信通知

今天收到了家庭医生的信, 已经帮我找好了specialist,并帮我做好了预约. 但是在信
中家庭医生指出" The patient needs to find out with the insurance company
that if the specialist visit will be covered by your plan and if he/she is
on your insurance's provider list. Let our office know if you do need a
WRITTEN OR PHONE PRECERTIFICATION for your specialist visit."
请问precertification 是什么意思? 我以前看牙医,都是带一个家庭牙医的referral
form 即可,这次是身体检查(非牙科),第一次听到precertification 这个说法,和
referral 有什么区别吗?
请大家帮忙,非常感谢.

Precertification = the insurance requiring doctor/specialist to notify them
BEFORE a visit, as a condition to provide coverage.
In other words, without a referral, the problem is the specialist may not see you. Without a precertification, the insurance may not pay for the visit.
You should check your insurance policy (or call the company) to see if it's
needed.
