Don't do it unless it's absolutely necessary.I saw a paper showing that kids with twice or more general anesthesia before the age of 2 had statistically significant lower performance in school than those who never had anesthesia . There's no statistical difference for kids with just one anesthesia, though. And there's no data for anesthesia at older ages at this point.
My baby had a surgery when he was 6 month old. I don't see any side effect afterwards. Before the surgery, I consulted with many people including two anesthesiologists and was told that the general anesthesia is considered a pretty safe procedure for children since they are healthier. Of course, if you can wait for awhile to have the surgery, it will be great. If you do not have any choice, I don't think you need to worrry about it too much. Good luck!
