Backdoor Roth IRA There is an income limit for contributing to a Roth IRA. For example, for single people in 2011, your ability to contribute phases out between $107K and $122K; for married filing jointly in 2011, it phases out between $169K and $179K. The backdoor allows you to contribute to a Roth IRA at any income, assuming you don't have any existing deductible Traditional IRA. You contribute to a Traditional IRA, and then immediately convert that amount into a Roth IRA. There is no income limit for contributing to a Traditional IRA (there is a limit for deducting, but we are not deducting); and there is no income limit for converting to a Roth IRA (since 2010). Since the Traditional IRA you are converting is non-deductible, the conversion is not taxable (note: this doesn't work if you have an existing deductible Traditional IRA), and the tax consequences are *exactly the same* as contributing to a Roth IRA directly. Like a regular Roth IRA contribution, the principal of the contribution can be taken out at any time without tax or penalty.

The tax and penalty does not apply to the non-deductible part of conversions.
