I was going to renew my combo card on Dec. 1st and I also bought a plane
ticket to visit China this Christmas for 3 weeks. I was told not to renew
until I come back b/c it might get me in trouble. Please see below:
"You are not supposed to file the applications and then leave the U.S….it
could be seen as abandoned…so you should really wait until you return to
file the applications."
Can someone tell me if this is true? Or have you renewed your combo card
while travelling? Thanks!

The renew takes only about 1~2 month at TSC recently. So do it after you
come back.
Problem solved.

正好也在研究这个问题, 参见
http://www.uscis.gov/files/nativedocuments/AILA_2Apr08.pdf page 16 addendum V 结论如下:
USCIS: (a) If a foreign national (i) already possesses a valid, unexpired
advance parole, (ii) applies for a new advance parole while he/she is
present in the U.S., and (iii) then departs the U.S., the foreign national
must return to the U.S. during the validity period of the current advance
parole already in his or her possession. If the foreign national returns
timely, abandonment of the pending advance parole application would not
occur. However, the foreign national may not remain abroad after the initial
advance parole expires and then seek to re-enter at a later time using the
subsequent advance parole that was pending adjudication at the time the
person departed the U.S.

There is a petition in the Whitehouse.gov that ask GOV to allow filing for
EAD as soon as I-140 is approved.
http://wh.gov/98wq
this might be very helpful for those who are in the stage (I-140 approved)
and waiting for your priority date to be current.
