So far based on what I heard, this one is the best strategy :). They cannot
do anything to your benefits since it is illegal to do so without a written
resignation; on the other hand, they can get prepared to have the courses
covered. Agree?

The way I handed this is that I told my chair verbally that I was leaving -
but I refused to hand them in a letter until 2 weeks before my leave date (
as per stated in the union contract). HR has to assume you are staying
unless there is something in writing.
They also could not deny my new contract per SE because I got good
performance evaluations and my saying I was leaving is not legal reason for
termination (otherwise people searching for another job could easily be
fired).
The administration pushed me hard to hand in the letter but the Dean finally
relented after I explained the situation to him (my wife was also 7 months
pregnant at the time). He asked to see a copy on my new contract instead of
not handing in a letter so he could okay a new hire. I showed him my new
contract (but would not let him make a copy of it) and he aged the hiring
process.
