Agree, this book contains lots deep discussion. He even introduce the
background story of it. If you like to know the interesting story behind it,
reading this book will definitely give you lots of pleasure on that.
However, like you said, most popular interview books nowadays focus more on
practicing on solving problems instead of talking interesting stories based
on topic.
Besides, the author has very impressive experience (otherwise he cannot be
invited to write a column on "Communications of ACM"). If you have leisure
time during preparation, this book can be a story-telling book for you.

我是本科没好好念书基本功很差的人，这本书看了受益匪浅。
比如：用bit存boolean，大牛们不要笑，这本书给很娓娓道来地用故事阐述明白，比光
看题解印象深刻理解深入多了。
最后那章string横搞竖搞的系统地讲，很受益。
还有怎么省内存那章，虽然过时了，但有助于补习基本功。
