National Doctors Day was created to celebrate the contributions of all
physicians. It was first observed on March 30, 1933 in Winder, Georgia,
where Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, decided to
set aside a day to honor physicians. March 30 was selected because on that
date in 1842, Crawford W. Long, MD, of Jefferson, Georgia, administered the
first ether anesthetic for surgery to remove a tumor from a patient’s neck.
