Black swan shares the same director as the 2008 Oscar Nomination movie--
The Wrestler, Darren Aronofsky. On the surface, that is where the
similarity stops. One is about an over-the-hill wrestler while the other
is in high-art ballet about a rising 'little princess'. However, both
movies shine in showing us how powerful and mind-twisting the force of
the dark side could be.
The wrestler lives a shitty life--drugs, no family, eviction from the
rented mobile home. Occasionally he reaches out for affections with a
stripper and his daughter when he really feels lonely. Over-dosage of
those steroids almost killed him with a massive heart attack, after
which he had to stop and tried to the live a normal life. A life that
pales in its mundaneness. After some rebuffs from the stripper and his
daughter, he went back to wrestling despite the clear knowledge of the
consequences of doing so. He stood at the center of the wrestling arena
and enjoyed the cheers and boos. The wrestling arena is the one and only
place where he felt his life was worthy. The movie ended with him
jumping to the arena from the rings.
Although black swan has its psycho-pathology and the step-by-step
metamorphosis from a white swan to a black swan, which we don't see in
the Wrestler, the movie shares the power of the dark force. When Nina
sticks to her gentle, sensitive side, her performance in Ballet is good
only for the white swan part. Only when she jumps out of that straight
jacket and embraces the dark side of her soul such as jealousy and
aggression did she become fittingly flirtatious in performance and
perfect on stage.
Embrace the dark side!Because it is not just the silver lining but the
whole.
