Will return the 24-105 for sure.
Was going to buy EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM, though ran into the 15-85, and its
rating is 4.9 (vs the 17-55's 4.5), notice only few got 4.9 rating:

Also the price is cheaper. Just a little worried about the bigger zooming
range, as photo quality often goes the opposite with z-range.
How would you guys comment?

你应该去看dpreview的评分，而不是看amazon的用户评分

Those ratings are from Canon website, made by buyers, and looks they're
pretty right, i.e., the 70-200 f4L IS gets 5 out 5, and 24-105 only gets 4.6.
Amazon ratings are almost no use, most raters are amateurish.

EF-S is for APC-S body only.

Have 70-200, and really love it...need to decide if buy 17-55, heard dust
gets into it pretty easily.

Don't see any trace of fabrications - the ratings are consistent with other
sites such as http://www.photozone.de. In addition, as mentioned, very few get 4.9, and even less get 5.
Was going to buy the 17-55, but from the reviews, looks like it gets dust
quick, and not good at longevity.
