It should be fine to use it as P&S camera. Fry's had it for $299.
The biggest pro is its fast auto focus, continuous auto focus, which is good
for sport activities and video.
The con is smaller sensor size(compare to other mirrorless), so its low
light(high ISO) picture quality is not as good as those camera with big
sensors. If your expectation is P&S for the price, then it's good camera.

Go out to take some pictures, and compare the pictures to those from other $
200-300 cameras. You will know the difference. Otherwise, J1 would not be
the top 1 sale mirrorless in Japan.
