Prasher received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Ohio State University in
1979. From 1979 to 1983, he worked in genetics and biochemistry research at
the University of Georgia, where he identified aequorin.[1] He then joined
the Biology Department of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods
Hole, Massachusetts where he studied bioluminescence. In 1988, he received a
three-year, $200,000 grant from the American Cancer Society
