WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - The prices paid for imported goods fell a
seasonally adjusted 0.4% in April after a revised 0.4% gain in March, the U.
S. Labor Department said Tuesday. Economists polled by MarketWatch had
forecast a 0.1% decline in the import price index. The drop in import prices
stemmed mainly from lower fuel costs, which fell a seasonally adjusted 1.7%
. That's the first decline since November. Imported food prices decreased 0.
7%. The import price index was unchanged if fuel is stripped out. The rise
in import prices in March was revised down from 0.6%. The price of U.S.-made
goods exported to other nations, meanwhile, sank 1.0% in April. Over the
past 12 months import prices are down 0.3%, but they've been steadily on the
rise. As recently as last November, the year-over-year declined was a much
sharper 1.8%. If import prices continue to increase it could nudge U.S.
inflation slightly higher.
