Try the following; note the distinction between
\tabularnewline (to start a new row in the table)
and \\ (to break lines within thesame row).

\begin{tabular}{|>{\centering}p{2in}|}
\hline
text to be centered in a column \tabularnewline
\hline
more text to be centered \tabularnewline
\hline
text\\centered\\on four lines\\in one row \tabularnewline
