two silly questions :-(# Unix - 噫吁兮,危乎高哉

I once telneted to my account and pined emails.
bcos the line was very slow so I closed telnet without logout.
now the problems is the system always treats this telnet record
and the pine process active. so if I use pine again, it is said
another process is using the mail system and my current inbox is
only readable. I tried to kill the old bash and pine commands, but
no real results. what should I do now?
then I tried to use emacs email system in a hope to terminate
the old pine email process.
