you can view the files in /proc/
for example, for CPU type, type: more /proc/cpuinfo

- Linux: cat /proc/cpuinfo, cat /proc/mem ...
- Solaris: sysdef, prtconf, dmesg
- HP-UX: ioscan
- Other BSD: dmesg | more
