Nicky’s Nail Spa at Putnam Valley Enjoys Torturing!
Sept. 12, 2012
Limin Wang
Early in last July, my wife followed a job ad on a newspaper, and then
started to work at Nicky’s Nail Spa (7 Miranda Plaza, Oregon Road, Putnam
Valley, NY 10579. Tel: 914-528-8408). July 5 and 17 were her first and last
days there, respectively. After a few days of working, Nicky’s Nail Spa
wanted my wife to work as a full-time for them. My wife felt that their
business was not very busy, and learned that the spa hired just because the
female owner (called Helen) wanted a vacation back to China. Then, my wife
explicitly told Nicky’s that she was on vacation from another job, and
would have to resume her work there on July 18, and had to discuss with the
old employment about the possibility of changing from full-time to part-time.
During these working days, there was some talking not-so-harmonic in Nicky’
s. A senior worker bragged that her children do not even like to come to the
U.S.A., while the female owner boasted about her travel freedom between
China and the U.S. My wife has been in the U.S. for more than a decade, and
honestly said that such kind of freedom or comfort is still out of her grip.
The senior worker even asked my wife, “What things in a store will make
somebody mad?” My wife has often complained to me how harsh the workplace
could be, but she probably had not learned enough to know that was a
treacherous question, and so revealed what would annoy her. Some days later,
my wife came home pretty mad, venting that the female senior had banded
with others to isolate her, had made pretentious shrieking laugh, and had
skipped the order to take her work turn. I told my wife that, under such
damn circumstances, how many days you would be named as a “full-time”
before being kicked out? The occasional excellent tips from some customers
here would not be able to save her empolyment.
July 18th, my wife came back to resume her work at the old employment, and
called the female owner of Nicky’s that there had been work appointments on
July 19th and 20th already, but her manager had allowed a day-off on July
21st, a Saturday. The female owner of Nicky’s said she was busy and would
call back later. But there was no call even when it was time the Nicky’s
usually drove home to Flushing, so my wife called the female owner. The
female owner told my wife to be straight on whether she could work as a full
-time at Nicky’s. With the clear facts, my wife of course replied that she
could only work as a part-time at Nicky’s. Upon questioning, the female
owner answered that my wife could still work at Nicky’s on July 21st. Some
of my wife’s working tools, plus three days’ unpaid wage, were still at
Nicky’s. However, on July 21st, my wife did not see the transportation
vehicle at the usual pick-up area, and then called the female owner, but
that phone could not go through. My wife then called the male owner (called
Leon), he told my wife not to work at Nicky’s any more. Thus, my wife lost
a day of wage at the old employment too.
Several days later, Nicky’s let another worker bring only the tools, no
wage, back to Flushing. The male owner claimed that the female owner had
left for a 40-day vacation in China, and he did not know how much my wife’s
wage was. Yet, the fact was that this very male owner paid the weekly wage
to my wife before. Days later, my wife called again, and the male owner
either blocked the call, or claimed to be busy, or said that my wife had to
wait until the female owner came back. We then patiently waited for more
than a month.
On Sept. 10, about 50 days since July 21, my wife called the male owner (646
-284-0597), and he was rudely telling my wife not to call his phone, and
claiming that the female owner has not come back to work. My wife then
called the female owner, but no one answered. My wife then called the work
number at Nicky’s Nail Spa. The male owner told my wife to call the female
owner at her home number, but did not give the home number. After rounds of
calling from my wife, the female owner finally picked up her phone (646-919-
9841), and even calumniated that my wife had harassed them, that my wife
liked to argue, and that she was afraid to meet my wife. The female owner
asked my wife’s work or home address to pretend mailing the wage. Such nail
spas always paid their workers with cash, but with no other benefits, and
they can fire workers on a whim. I know that such scumbags are oppressive
SOB’s toward only the weak, and so I called and scolded Nicky’s. In my
explicit expression, we had way enough on this, and if we could not get the
wage through calling, then through other means. The spa kept hanging up the
phone. Later, the female owner called back and said to pay the wage, but
needed my wife to wait at the intersection of Roosevelt Ave and Union St at
night of the 11th. This intersection is about one mile away from the
previous pick-up spot, but close to a police station. I overheard,
immediately warned my wife, and suggested a meeting time in the morning. The
female owner agreed so, and told my wife to go there at 8:45 a.m. on the
11th. But at night, from 9 to 10 p.m., the female owner called twice, and my
wife did not want to pick up the phone.
At 7:23 a.m. on the 11th, the female owner called again, and claimed that
she would not work today, instead, drive for apple picking, and so she would
not be able to pay the wage. I overheard this kind of trash, and questioned
what kind of credibility the female owner ever had. Later, she told my wife
to hurry toward that intersection. When my wife arrived at that
intersection, she told my wife to go another block to wait at a Chinese
supermarket. My wife arrived at that supermarket, but the female owner told
my wife to come back to the previous intersection. Rounds again! After that,
it was another worker from Nicky’s who passed the three days’ wage to my
wife. The female owner was not even there.
This is life, and life is such. I start to not like silence too much, and to
not like being silenced even more. Nicky’s Nail Spa enjoys torturing so
much, and even claims that its victims are a threat. How ridiculous the
logic is! Think about it, if such an employer makes reference letters and
calls on an employee, what kind of crap it will spray?
