Johnson County court records indicate that Li received traffic citations in
Coralville on Feb. 22 and April 17 of this year. Both citations list 1300
Coconino Road, Apt. 125, in Ames as his home address, the same apartment
listed for Shao on the Iowa State University's online directory.
In both citations, Li was driving a Blue 2009 BMW.
Law enforcement officials in Story County on Friday apparently had an
interest in searching a blue 2009 BMW parked at the apartment complex where
Shao lived, according to a search warrant document lying on the front seat
of the vehicle Monday.
Sadie Williams, 19, who lived near Shao, saw police searching "a really nice
BMW with a tarp over it" in the apartment complex's parking lot last week,
she said Monday.
The search warrant document, which was dated Friday, said the vehicle was
registered to Li. The document said a judge commanded authorities "to make
immediate search" of the vehicle for "the specified property."
The specified property on the document included property belonging to Shao
and "any item, whether electronic or analog, in relation to a missing person
."
Cmdr. Geoff Huff, spokesman for the Ames Police Department, declined to
comment when asked about the search warrant. He said the case had moved to
Iowa City and declined to comment because he didn't "want to hinder anything
with their investigation."
The Story County Clerk of Courts did not have any search documents related
to the Li or Shao on Monday afternoon.
