Have you ever seen how a white whale is fed? You have a chance to see this
right now.
Going to the ice hole in the morning.
This is Petrovich - the white whale which is going to be fed.
Each dolphin has its own character. Out of a hundred of caught dolphins 1 or
2 cannot survive in captivity and refuse any food brought to them. If they
are not set free they die soon because of stress.
Some white whales are trained and prepared for shows in dolphinariums.
Petrovich is a bit old for that, it is already 20 (they live for about 30
years), but it is very friendly anyway.
Despite the fact they have no natural enemies (maybe only a polar bear could
compare somehow with its strength, but they would never meet in reality),
dolphins are quite watchful and it takes them long to learn an object before
they contact it. By the way, they have no biting reflex, so when it seems
to you a dolphin is about to bite your hand, it can only slightly squeeze it
with its jaws.
Petrovich shows off the water and produces a jet of steam, of course, it’s
minus 25C outside!
What a good boy!
To prevent the white whale from becoming fully domesticated as far as
feeding is concerned, twice a week it has days of hunger without food.
Besides they don’t always feed it from hands but throw fish into the water
and let the white whale catch it.
One moment and the fish is caught!
>One more interesting fact about dolphins: if they have an injury they can
use their muscles to pinch the damaged vessels. Blood does not clot in water
so they can stop bleeding themselves.
They give the white whale not fresh but frozen fish with added vitamins
prescribed by a vet.
Is it smiling?
Who doesn’t like a gentle touch?
Brain of dolphins never fully sleeps, right and left hemispheres rest each
in its turn, the one that doesn’t sleep controls breathing.
Each several minutes a dolphin needs to rise to the surface for breathing
some air.
If it needs to dive deep it can “turn off” some of his inner organs (
digestive system, for example) from oxygen supply and, thus, be able to stay
in the water for a longer period of time.
Petrovich will soon be sent to a dolphinarium but it won’t participate in
shows. However it will be able to communicate with adults and children there.
