最近有2个电话面试,一上来就问 "why do you wanna move to ***?" 面试完了快2个星
期了，一点消息都没有， 估计是出局了（现在有点怵电面了）。下周还有最后一个电
面，希望有经验的朋友能给我指点指点，这次电面的学校是我最最最想去的。希望真的
不要在电话面试出局。
个人情况：2010年8月开始在一个小学校（排名100+， 专业排名50+)的
engineering school做AP。 来了之后毕业2个博士，发了22篇journal articles（和学
生一起的，基本上是第二或者第三作者，都是通讯作者），拿了 ~$1.4M 的funding,一
半左右是federal的，另一半是公司及州内的。teaching evaluation 中等偏上。面试
的学校专业 ranking在20左右，系比较大一点，location比我现在的学校要好不少。
前2次关于这个问题的经历：
第一个，我就直接说了： I wanna move to a place, like ***, that can provide
more collaborative opportunities and better quality students, and location
is a plus. 然后就move到下一个关于research的问题了。
第二个，我开始的回答也类似： *** provides a better platform and more
opportunities,that allows me to make more contributions，balabala...
接着问 what do you mean by a better platform?
我回答： More active and highly motivated faculty members in related
field, and more collaborative opportunities. Plus, better quality students.
接着问：what kind of collaborative opportunities you are looking for?
Collaborative opportunities with highly motivative individuals to
conduct multi-discisplinary transformative research. For example...我举了一
个例子，和他们系的2个老师可能research的一个问题。
接着问: Why do you think collaboration is important to you...I looked at
your grants, most of them are single-PI projects.
我回答：because at my current institution, the opportunity for
collaboration is relatively limited, i mean effective collaboration. That's
one of the reasons I wanna move, as I very much value collaboration and I
believe it can substantially enhance the value of my research, allowing me
to make a much bigger impact in the society. And I am all geared up for that
...
接着问：whom do you think you can collaborate with in our department at ****.
我回答：（心想，NND, 刚刚不是举例子了吗? 按事先想好的，又挑了另外2个人
说了说）I could work together with xxx to address xxx challenge in xxx, as
he is an expert in the area of xxx. I could also work together with xxx, by
looking at xxx from xxx perspective, which is unique and I believe can lead
to something neither of us can accomplish individually.
接着问：have you worked together with anybody in your department before?
我回答： Yes, I have worked together with most faculty members in my
department in different ways, as here we have a relative small department
with only 14 faculties. For example, I co-advise a PhD student with xxx to
address a challenge covering two fiels....I wrote research proposals with
xxx and xxx to tackle xxx issue with a multidiscisplinary approach...I was
invited by xxx to work on xxx in one project...
接着问：I saw you have graduated two PhDs, what general criteria you use for
graduation? What are they doing right now?
我回答：(1) meet requirements from my school, such as course credits &
qualify exams, thesis defense etc.(2) finish the assigned research topic (
with results being published or submitted for publication) (3) At a minimum
of 3 journal articles at top journals in our field. This is what i required
for every PhD student.
The first PhD graduate works in xxx as ...My second PhD graduate found a
job at xxx, working on ... Actually both of them have multiple job offers at
the moment when they were looking for jobs, and they picked the one they
liked most.I am glad they both ended up very well.

let's talk about research... 然后我们才草草聊了一小会research, 半小时就结束
了)
