Bioinformatics of HIV immune response Post-doctoral or staff scientist level Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics Columbia University New York City The Shapiro Laboratory at Columbia University, working together with the Structural Bioinformatics Core at the NIH Vaccine Research Center (VRC), seeks postdoctoral or staff scientist-level researchers in computational biology and bioinformatics. Work will involve analyses of high-throughput sequencing results of the antibodies produced by HIV infected patients. A primary goal is to understand the maturation of these antibodies from their genomically-encoded precursors in order to inform rational vaccine development of an effective HIV-1 vaccine. (See article in Science, 329, 811-817, 2010). Salary ranges from $50-100,000 per year depending on qualifications. Funding for one year is provided by the VRC, and may be extended for up to five additional years by extramural support. We are looking for creative, self- motivated individuals who are interested in applying computational tools to challenging problems associated with the design of vaccines. Individual should be well-organized, as keeping track of numerous sequence data sets will be required, with interests in both basic science (the HIV-1 vaccine) and program development (we plan to develop a Vaccine-Design Suite of programs). Applicants who meet the following requirements will be considered for the positions: 1) A Ph.D. degree in bioinformatics / computational biology / computational chemistry or a closely related field 2) Proficiency in at least one of the following programming languages (C, C++, Java) and script writing in Perl or Python 3) Sufficient oral and written communication skills 4) Clear sense of organization, purpose and accountability Interested applicants should send a current CV and three letters of reference to Prof. Lawrence Shapiro (email: L**[email protected]).
