从ION以前表现,它基本上都差不多on schedule。所以我估计即使延迟也不会太长。

Life should be able to do it. More wells in a chip are not a problem for sequencing speed, and are not hard at all to manufacture. They only need to make a bigger machine to handle bigger chips.

At least, ION should be able to cut the size in half, and make 4x wells in the same area of current chip. Optical based sequencing is able to generate reliable basecall with 20 DNA molecules in a clone. With this number, pH based signal will be very noisy. If ION put the price tag as 150k for future sequencer, it would be hard to say which strategy will win in the end.

Illumina is way behind the competition. We need another serious player to push ION on the improvement. The good thing about ION is that reagents could be replaced by third party products. The cost would be reduced to 20% of current price tag. In the future, ION's profit could only come from two: chips and service.
164 million wells on Proton chip 660 million wells on Proton II chip. Looks like ION cut the size in half for Proton chip, and want to reduce by another half for Proton II. It should be a knock-out for Illumina MiSeq.

如果算$/base,应该是illumina的便宜。但有时候的问题是如果没有足够多的samples 来match它的running capacity,running cost就会高一些。 ION的新chip还没有最终定价,但从press release不难推测,包括PCR,seq run加上 chip(proton II is enough for 1 human genome)总共应该在$1000左右。从314,316 及318的上高来看,一旦新chip上市,旧的立刻就大幅度降价。所以这种模式我估计还 会延续下去。

job opportunity! For every unit of Ion sold, the market needs a bio major. Perferably with MS degree in mol bio. if this thing goes to clinical, it will need 2-3 techs to cover the shifts.
very true. and the excitement arount Ion, is exactly because it made breakthrough in the last two requirements: affordable, quick turnaround time. The other requirements are kind of arbitrary. What is simple? Looking at a slide under a microscope could be very simple. But to me, it is way more complicated than anything I've done. It all depends on your training.
